Structure of a cilium (IMAGE)
Caption
Structure of a cilium of the green alga Clamydomonas reinhardtii (tomographic segmentation): the cilium is covered by a protein layer (FMG 1). Underneath lies the inner glycocalyx and the ciliary membrane. The innermost part is the ‘skeleton’ of microtubule-based complexes, the so-called axoneme.
