铜本身只有在光束入射到其表面上时才能显示出强烈的反射。然而，一旦铜被制成分别具有负介电常数和负磁导率的金属线和分裂环谐振器（SRRs）时，所组成的超材料就会表现出负折射率，这是一种在自然界中不存在的现象。
