A collaboration between Idaho National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory is accelerating the inspection of 3D-printed nuclear components and nuclear fuels. ORNL developed a software algorithm, Simurgh, to reduce the time and cost of inspecting additively manufactured parts by using fewer CT scans and improving defect detection. This technology, which can now also inspect irradiated nuclear fuel, has significantly reduced scan times and increased safety for workers. The partnership is enhancing nuclear research efficiency and could expedite the development of advanced nuclear reactors, making them faster to implement and ensuring they meet high safety standards.
