Invasive silver carp (IMAGE)

Invasive silver carp have been on the verge of invading the Great Lakes from the Illinois River for a decade, but they can't seem to get past a pool south of Chicago. New University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign research suggests water pollutants in that spot cause avoidance and stress-response behavior in the fish. With efforts to clean the Chicago Area Waterway, the barrier to invasion may one day disappear.
