Hinton jungle gym (IMAGE) Dartmouth College Caption A team of Dartmouth anthropologists argue that such playground equipment is important for helping children gain confidence and develop. The jungle gym and monkey bars were patented in 1923 and 1924 by Sebastian “Ted” Hinton, who wrote that children have a “monkey instinct” to climb as a form of play and exercise. The original jungle gym, above, is preserved in Winnetka, Illinois.
