Schematic construction of photoinduced charge separation of electron donor-acceptor (D-A) pairs in 3D frameworks (IMAGE)

The construction of photochromic COFs is facilitated by employing 3D lattices which can remotely separate the donor and acceptor units. The researchers extended a triangular motif into (3, 3)-type six-connected building block to form an irregular hexagon. Combining these designed hexagonal building blocks with planar square building blocks, a series of (3, 3, 4)-linked 3D COFs with zyg topology were synthesized.
