UV radiation damage can force an injured cell to decide between survival and cellular suicide. New research from Rachel Green's laboratory shows DNA isn't the only trigger. Immediately after UV exposure, ribosomes activate a widespread life-or-death pathway (pink), which is more pervasive than the DNA-initiated response (green).
