Mass spectrometry makes it possible to create a detailed protein profile of the cancer cells. Shown here is the ion source of a liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) system. A thin glass tip is used to transfer the specimen being analyzed to the opening of the mass spectrometer.
