A shift of paradigm in the molecular recognition model: from one-to –one (left) into many-to-many (right).

Previous models of self-incompatibility accounted for only one-to-one interactions between male and female-determinant proteins. The new model allows for a more general network of interactions, where each protein can interact with any number of partners.
