H3K9 methylation (H3K9me) as a dimmer switch

Conventional view and the novel view proposed in this study about the function of H3K9 methylation (H3K9me). The conventional view considered the regulation by H3K9me as an on-off switch, where H3K9me just turns off the gene activity (transcription into RNA). On the other hand, the novel view considers the regulation as a “dimmer switch,” where H3K9me fine-tunes the gene activity and other histone marks participate in this control.
