On the left are images captured by a single shot of around 30 femtoseconds, and on the right the same cell captured shortly after through a composite of 15 shots over a total of 250 milliseconds. The second image shows the darker carbon-enriched regions with less noise, but the researchers note that it is more blurred, probably because of cellular movement.
