Geographical distributions of the azimuth angle of equatorward (positive) and poleward (negative) eddy deflections. (IMAGE)

The top panel is for anticyclonic eddies, and the bottom panel is for cyclonic eddies. It can be found that the meridional deflection of eddies is geographically dependent rather than purely polarity determined. A striking pattern of eastern-and-midlatitude dominance is observed for equatorward deflection regardless of eddy polarity, and the opposite is true for a tropical ocean enhancement of poleward deflection.
