Schematic diagram providing an overview of this review. Liquid crystals can be categorized into nematic, smectic, columnar, and cholesteric liquid crystals. Recently, metasurfaces have been integrated with liquid crystals to achieve tunability and this integrated optical platform can be applied to virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), encryption, and sensors.
