(A) With cytosolic calcium ion increase, excitatory actions from astrocytes to neurons are likely to be initiated. These excitatory actions induce a reciprocal excitatory network between neurons, which results in neural circuit oscillations. (B) Calcium in astrocytes started to rise as early as 20 seconds before the onset of neuronal hyperactivity. Neuron-to-astrocyte action is also triggered and reciprocal interactions of neurons and astrocytes occur throughout the epileptic episode.
