Histology of ovaries from healthy mice vs. mice without Usp7 gene (IMAGE)
Caption
Ovaries from healthy mice (left) and mice without the Usp7 gene (right). The healthy ovaries have many mature follicles, which contain eggs (the large pale spheres), whereas the ovaries without Usp7 have lots of immature follicles which won't be able to mature and produce eggs.
Mutating the Usp7 gene specifically in ovaries shows that its protein product, which is one of the many factors found to interact with FOXL2 on DNA, is critical for the maturation of follicles, the eggs they contain, and consequently for female fertility.
