Decoding thermophotovoltaic efficiency

Thermophotovoltaic cells convert the heat radiated by a thermal emitter at temperature directly into electricity (left). A newly developed thermodynamic figure of merit helps to assess the performance of thermophotovoltaic devices and compare existing experimental measurements to this metric (right).
