Medicago truncatula root colonized with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Diversispora epigaea. D. epigaea hyphae and arbuscules within the root and also hyphae around the root are visible as green structures (The fungus is stained with a fluorescent lectin conjugate (Alexafluor-488) that stains the fungal cell wall). The central vascular tissue of the root is stained red.
