Aqueous, organic and ionic liquid electrolytes can be used as redox reaction mediators in RE-SCs, contributing to enhanced energy density and power density compared to traditional supercapacitors (SCs). Several strategies are being investigated to remedy self-discharge of RE-SCs, including device optimization, separator modification, electrolyte modulation, and electrode design.
