A male tree cricket sings from a baffle. Tree crickets are the only crickets known to make baffles which are acoustic tools that increase their singing efficiency immensely. Few other cricket make or use such a tool. A paper in this issue shows that this is because they have an alternative strategy, singing from the ground, that enables them to be as loud or even louder.
