: Jefferson Lab has several machines capable of delivering a beam of electrons to irradiate the lithium-deuteride pellets. The options include the Low Energy Recirculator Facility (pictured). Developed originally for the Free-Electron Laser program at Jefferson Lab, a high-voltage photogun and superconducting radiofrequency cryomodule remaining at the LERF could provide a 10 MeV electron beam required to irradiate the target materials for the SPF project. The polarized fusion project will also benefit other research at the lab, helping Hall B scientists develop 7LiD and 6LiH targets and bringing in a much-needed workforce to speed up the irradiation of those target materials.
