Two-for-one special: industrial enzymes and food

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is growing valuable industrial enzymes in non-edible portions of potatoes and other crops. They’ve developed a method to grow the enzymes only in the vines, resulting in two profitable crops from one plant -- potatoes for food and cellulases for ethanol production and food processing.

Maybe you can get blood from a turnip after all

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are genetically modifying tobacco plants to produce human blood proteins and tissue growth factors. Since plants can’t transmit diseases, this could lead to safer and less expensive treatments for hemophiliacs, and an alternative way of sealing wounds.

Tropical ocean plays host to major climate change

For the next month, researchers from around the world are working on and near a tiny island in the Tropical Western Pacific to uncover clues regarding how the tropics influence weather and climate worldwide. The TWP serves as the earth’s heat engine, driving global weather events such as El Niño and La Niña. The campaign, sponsored by the Department of Energy, brings together the most complete suite of atmospheric instrumentation ever installed in the TWP.

Remarkable results from a new observatory

Scientists at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have established a new observatory, but instead of looking to the stars, it is a Cellular Observatory designed to focus inward to study the smallest components of living organisms. Researchers have been able to obtain chemical information from a living cell without destroying the cell or invading it in the process. And for the first time they have been able to do this also on the cell nucleus, the internal control center of the cell.

Radar Camera Aims High For The Air Force

Now, researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have developed a hand-held, holographic camera that can assist ground crews in verifying the condition of an aircraft's stealth characteristics.
