Sensor could increase safety of eye surgery

Precision is crucial during eye surgery - a slight miscalculation could result in partial blindness and damage to the retina. But a new sensor being developed at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory could reduce those risks by alerting surgeons to the location of critical retinal tissues.

Savings heat up at housing authority

Tenants at a New York City Housing Authority building complex will have more reliable heat and hot water while the City will cut energy costs thanks to an integrated software, diagnostic monitoring and maintenance program provided by DOE's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The program was developed at Pacific Northwest for the United States Marine Corps and now will be tested in a central boiler plant that serves a Manhattan complex of 12 buildings that are home to 4,500 residents.

Pacific Northwest researcher wins prestigious international climate change award

William Chandler, a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, has received the prestigious World Climate Technology Leadership Award from the Climate Technology Initiative. Chandler is one of only two scientists from around the world to be honored. He was recognized by CTI for founding a global network of energy efficiency centers in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the People’s Republic of China, Poland, the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

Watershed responses to forest practices studied

A newly enhanced computer model may help forest managers design or modify forest roads, tree harvesting and other land-use activities based on effects to watersheds, streams and fish habitat. Researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have expanded the capabilities of a watershed model to make it possible to explore economic and environmental trade-offs of various land-use activities.
