Communicating Science in the Clickbait Era
Against a torrent of 10-second videos, animated gifs, listicles, and other “clickbaits,” communicating complex scientific information can seem an insurmountable challenge. But the promise of untapped audiences and increased engagement is enticing journalists and public information officers alike to boldly explore new platforms like Snapchat and Facebook Live.

Nancy Shute is an award-winning science journalist and multimedia specialist. She is co-editor of NPR's health blog Shots and radio reporter for All Things Considered and Morning Edition. She served as President of the National Association of Science Writers from 2011 to 2012, during which time she organized the 2011 World Conference of Science Journalism in Qatar and worked to increase ties with Latin American science writers. She is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, where she teaches science writing and the use of social media. Prior to this, she was a science writer in residence at the University of Wisconsin and a guest lecturer at Columbia, NYU, the University of Maryland, Georgetown University, and the University of California - Santa Cruz. Nancy graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's in English literature and received her master's from Yale Law School. Her work has appeared in US News and World Report, National Geographic, Scientific American, among other publications.

Jessica Naudziunas is a news video producer for BuzzFeed, the digital media and entertainment company known for its shareable videos, breaking news, and lists. Before joining BuzzFeed, Jessica was a multimedia producer for NowThis, an online news outlet that reaches audiences solely with digital media via mobile and social platforms. There, she encapsulated news often based on health and science research into short, creative, and engaging videos on SnapChat Discover. Jessica has also worked as a video producer at The New York Times and a science, food and agriculture writer and radio reporter at NPR and at NPR member stations around the country. She has won four Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association and has been recognized by the Society for Professional Journalists for her environmental news coverage. Before she earned her master's degree in journalism and documentary film from the University of California - Berkeley, she served out a short stint on a raw dairy farm in Kona, Hawaii.

Lazaro Gamio is the graphics assignment editor at The Washington Post, where he develops innovative tools and infographics. His expertise ranges from interactive maps to detailed data analyses on global events that add a powerful and new digital dimension to the news. Lazaro has helped visualize an array of national issues from climate change to national security. He has also covered a variety of local topics, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's safetrack schedule. He joined the Post in 2014 after working for The Miami Herald as a multimedia and data producer where he helped develop new digital tools for the newspaper. He has also worked for The Seattle Times and the National Geographic Society. Lazaro holds degrees from the University of Florida's New World School of Arts and the Cleveland Institute of Art.
David Cameron
Director, Media Relations - Harvard University
David Cameron is the Director of Media Relations at Harvard University, where he leads a team of five communications specialists. In addition to all facets of issue management, he and his team are currently pursuing best practices for integrating social media into media relations. Prior to his current role, he was Director of Science Communications at Harvard Medical School, managing, among other things, the school's flagship Media Fellowship program. Prior to Harvard, he spent six years working at MIT, first as an associate editor at Technology Review magazine, and then as the Media Relations Manager at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, where he led efforts to promote foundational work in regenerative biology. Originally from Long Island, New York, David has degrees in both literature and religious studies.

Brian was a press officer on the science and health beats at the University of British Columbia in Canada from 2001-2014. He led the design of UBC's media training curriculum and trained more than 500 faculty and students through lectures, workshops, and coaching. Since joining AAAS, he has led PIO workshops in China, Japan, Singapore, the US and UK. Brian holds a Master of Journalism degree from UBC and a Bachelor of Arts from National Taiwan University.
